Welcome to the new For A Better Day!

After four years of ranting about the School Board and the general state of education, I am so excited to broaden my perspective!

I learned a lot while I was on the Board  about policy making, finance and of course education.  But I also learned a lot about human nature.  For example, my basic requirements for those running for public office changed.  I used to think that it was important for an elected official to know things like Robert's Rules of Order and how to read a budget report.  Those things are important (although at times a bouncer would have been more appropriate than a handbook when it came to keeping our Board meetings under control).

Something about watching the underbelly of public service has made me re-evaluate my standards for candidates.  Now I am looking for something more basic, like someone who won't lie to the public. That is a great place to start.  Good public servants should also ask good questions.  They don't have to know everything, but they need to sense when they are being snookered.  Anyone who has paid attention to the Howell School Board knows that there were a lot of contentious moments between Board members.

Education is a big deal. It plays a huge role in the condition of our country- and that isn't a compliment.  We must support good teachers and demand accountability for the ones who are bad.

Over the next few months I will probably share stories of my days on the Board. Although due to non-disparagement agreements,  I won't be able to share everything.

The stories I can tell, along with things I have learned from people much smarter than me, should make good material for this blog.

I hope you will visit often and let me know what you think.
